Great Barrow Pavilion / Community Shop – Update
This was posted in the Barrow Community Website on 26th June 2019
Groundworks
The old pavilion on the playing fields has been demolished and the ground cleared in readiness for building the community shop. Owing to the positive response that the Parish Council has had from the many grant applications such as Leader, Rural Four and Sport England structural work should commence at the beginning of July, with the interior being fitted out during August. As well as a Village Shop and a café area, the new premises will include toilets and a community room, which will be valuable community assets as well as being a focal point for village life. Only a tentative indication at this stage, but we hope to open for business in the early autumn!
Open viewing
As many residents have expressed an interest in the layout of the new shop and community area, we intend to allow advance viewing of the interior of the premises so the size, demarcation of the areas, and the new facilities can be fully appreciated. An exact date for ‘open viewing’ will be publicised as soon as the building work has progressed sufficiently.
Once open for customers, the shop will be stocked with basic everyday items and other products for which there may be local demand. We aim to source as much stock as we can from the locality, and intend to make the general ethos of the community store as ecologically friendly as possible.
Volunteers
We are still looking to recruit volunteers and will do our best to accommodate the hours or days volunteers can offer. Training will be available. Establishing the shop will be a learning curve for all of us. We want to make use of your enthusiasm! Please make contact if you feel you would like to be involved in serving at the counter (or Post Office), stocking shelves, administration, preparing coffees and teas, clearing and tidying, and generally assisting in those jobs that require attention. Being involved in this work will be very rewarding, and volunteers will develop good working relationships with each other, and no doubt will learn new skills.
